    Mumbai is referred to as a “concrete jungle” due to the limitless residential and commercial structures which dot the city’s skyline. Everywhere the eye goes, one can see only buildings, buildings and more buildings. This rapid urbanisation is principally due to the fact that Mumbai offers endless employment opportunities to it’s millions of inhabitants. It’s no surprise then, that Mumbai is called “the city of dreams”. However, you will be surprised to know that there exist hundreds of acres of dense green jungles and massive open spaces right in the heart of Mumbai. Yes, you heard that right!     Aarey Forest

    Also knowns as Aarey Milk Colony, this is one of the green lungs of Mumbai, spread over a massive area of 2000 acres and located in the neighbourhood of Goregaon. The Maharashtra government has officially declared around 600 acres as a reserved forest. This expanse is home to about 290 wildlife species, 86 species of trees, close to 22 species of birds and about 90 butterfly species. Some of the animals thriving in Aarey Forest include leopards, Sambar deer, parakeets and wild buffaloes. In addition, there are around 27 tribal hamlets which are home to different tribes such as Mahadev Kolis, Katkaris and more.     Sanjay Gandhi National Park

    With a history dating back the 4th Century BC, Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a massive forest and natural vegetation area situated right in the heart of Mumbai, spread over 103 square kilometres. The park is home to 40 species of mammals, over 150 butterfly species, 78 species of amphibians and reptiles, and 254 species of birds. One of the most visited natural parks in the world, Sanjay Gandhi National Park attracts close to 2 million nature lovers every year. The park houses the famous Kanheri Caves, which are sculpted out of basalt rock and considered a masterpiece of ancient architecture. Mumbaikars just love to come here take a day-long break from the hustle and bustle of their fast paced life, and lose themselves in the lush greenery and hear the different calls of wild animals and birds. Be it the joy ride in the famous mini-train or a leisurely boat ride in the serene lake, SNGP offers an exceptional natural experience and is the perfect example of man and visited natural parks in the world, Sanjay Gandhi National Park attracts close to 2 million nature lovers every year. The park houses the famous Kanheri Caves, which are sculpted out of rocky cliffs and nature co-existing peacefully.

    Dadar Shivaji Park

    One of the most centrally located parks in Mumbai, Dadar Shivaji Park is a green belt situated within a cluster of old buildings and modern residential complexes. The park is home to one of the biggest playgrounds in Mumbai ans is a popular venue for cricket and football matches. The beautiful location of this park allows Mumbaikars to enjoy some of the most amazing sunset views.  Every morning and evening, you can see health conscious people walking briskly and jogging in the separate walking and jogging tracks, with a determination to keep themselves fit and healthy.

    Maharashtra Nature Park

    Previously called Mahim Nature Park, this beautiful forest park has more than 12000 trees providing never-ending lush greenery. Located at the edge of Dharavi, this amazing bounty of nature is a paradise for bird watchers. Every weekend, you will see Mumbai thronging this green expanse to enjoy fresh air and be one with nature. This park has been established by the government of Maharashtra for educating and creating awareness of the importance of nature conservation.
