Can I Fill Expansion Joints In My Driveway With Concrete?

Filling expansion joints with concrete is a fairly simple and straightforward task that will not take a lot of time or effort on your part. However, improper use of concrete or failure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions could result in water and vapor seepage and damage to the driveway surface.

If you are not comfortable using concrete yourself, you can hire a professional concrete contractor to do the job for you along with concrete delivery newark nj. Just be sure to discuss your needs and expectations with the contractor before hiring them. They should be able to give you a quote for the work and tell you what type of concrete they plan to use.

    To begin:

Yes, you can fill expansion joints with concrete.

However, it is important to use a quick-setting mix for this type of job. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully when mixing and using the concrete.

    Materials:

    Quick- Concrete Mix; Shovel; Trowel

    Instructions:

Step 1: Find the type of expansion joint(s) in your driveway.

The first step to filling expansion joints with concrete is knowing what kind of joints are there.

Step 2: Fill up all solid spots between the joints with sand.

After you identify where the expansion joints are, fill them up with sand – or dirt/loose material at least an inch high right next to the joint. If there are no spots between the expansion joints that are higher, do not proceed further as it will be difficult for you to lay down concrete on a flat surface without building up extra height elsewhere using gravel or other fillers. If you already have a filler material in place (e.g. asphalt), you can skip this step.

Step 3: Tape off the area around the joint with painter’s tape.

If you are filling a crack that is wider than 1/2″ and extends into the driveway surface, use the backer rod to fill it prior to taping off the area.  Tape off an area larger than the crack itself so that when you fill it with concrete, there will be no overflow onto the driveway surface.

Step 4: Pour concrete into the expansion joint using a shovel or other tool.

Slowly pour concrete into the expansion joint, trying not to get any on the driveway surface. If you do, use a broom to clean it up as soon as possible.

Step 5: Smooth out the top of the concrete with a trowel or some other tool.

After the concrete has had enough time to set (usually a day or two), use a trowel to smooth out the top and make it level with the driveway surface. You can also use a brush to clean up any excess concrete on the driveway surface at this point.

And that’s all there is to it! By following these simple steps, you can easily fill in any expansion joints in your driveway with concrete – and have a nice, seamless surface to drive on. Enjoy! You can get ready mix concrete escalon ca of great quality to get started with your project.
